There are thousands of caves which have been carved out of "tuff" the name of the volcanic rock that is prevalent in this area. For 1000 years, until 30 years ago, people live din these caves.
Really a walking town area. Terrain was easy to walk and the sights to see are plentiful. Red Valley walk was great too..
You can do a short 3.5km, medium 7km, or long 14km hike through Ihlara Valley depending on where you start. It is a must do if you have more than one day in Cappadocia.

We visited the Derinuyu underground city. The so different lifestyle of the people who lived (or took refuge) there amazes one and is highly educational about human nature. Though I am not claustrophobic I only managed to go down to the second level, I was afraid to go down lower.
The churches and houses are in caves. They are perfectly preserved and give one the feeling of what it was like to be there many centuries ago.
We spent five days in Cappadocia for our honeymoon, and I have to say I liked the Ihlara Valley the best out of all the places we visited. It was just really beautiful. I wish to have seen more of it, however I was happy with what I was able to see :).
Well worth spending several hours here, particularly if the weather is nice. It is a place that I would come back to again some time.
Wonderful experience seeing all these unusual shapped dwellings carved out from the rocks. A must see.
