Avanos, is a town and district of Nevşehir Province in the Central Anatolia region of Turkey, located 18 km north of Nevşehir, the capital city of the province. It is situated within the historic and touristic region of Cappadocia. According to 2000 census, population of the district is 35,145 of which 12,288 live in the town of Avanos.

The district covers an area of 994 km2 and the average elevation is 920 m with the highest point being Mt. İsmail Sivrisi at 1,756 m.

The old city of Avanos, whose name in ancient times was Venessa overlooks the longest river of Turkey, the Kızılırmak  which also separates Avanos from the rest of Cappadocia.

The most famous historical feature of Avanos, which is still relevant and very visible today, is its production of earthenware pottery, it is also the most economic activity in the town. The ceramic trade in this district and its countless pottery factories date right back to the Hittites, and the ceramic clay from the red silt of the Kızılırmak has always been used.

View of the city center of Avanos. It is a popular destination because of its attractive old town with cobbled streets, and views over the river.

in a restaurant here a tour brought us by. The pottery sold is overpriced and available elsewhere in Turkey for the most part.

A short trip from Goreme and well worth it. The tour at the ceramics manufacturing studio was amazing (and quite educational too). Leave room in your luggage because you are going to want to buy as much as you can.

A visit to Avanos is part of the Red tour, and in it, we have the opportunity to visit the most famous ceramics factory in Cappadocia. We see how a piece of pottery is produced manually, as the paintings are handmade on ceramic, and, in the vast store, we can see the beauty and diversity of ceramics for sale.

We took the dolmus to Avanos from Goreme, probably about a 20 minute ride. Avanos is a bigger place than we expected. The Red River runs through it and a suspension bridge you can walk across. The people are very friendly and we were offered tea when we went into a shop.

Cappadocia to the best of the best accommodation and free shopping arena. Ottoman stone bridge over a small river serves the best for motor vehicles and the old wooden swinging bridge day and night for the people who live in the memories of a fantastic and romantic atmosphere in a convenient location is perfect for.

Unless you are a pottery fan, this trip can be deleted from the itinerary. Ceramic demos and then hard sell to you their products. Since you will also see a lot of ceramics in the Istanbul Grand Bazaar from all the ceramic producing places in Turket.

Bring some extra cash if you like intricate pottery, but there are huge wholesalers here that swear everything is handmade right there in town. After visiting six or seven of those places, I realized they've all got basically the same stuff, and I suspect that they're all owned by the same person or people.

The big tip is to try and go completely private. Many of the large tour companies offer private tour and they are going to charge a significant amount of money for the tour guide. However, many locations offer self-guided tours and therefore you have the ability to supply your own tour guide. Easily Book your guided private Ephesus tours, to see all the treasures of Ephesus Turkey. It's often said that Turkey has more ancient cities and classical ruins than does Greece. Well, it's true, and the Aegean coast holds a great number of sites, including Ephesus, the grandest and best-preserved of them all.
