Tofre Begadim Synagogue was built on land, between Galata and Banker Streets bought by donations collected in 1893. The permission for the synagogue was taken by the Association of Ashkenazi Tailors through Mayer Şönman, the tailor of Sultan Abdülhamit.

The construction started in 1893 on this land, bought in the names of Moris Ashkenazi and Mayer Şönman. At the end of a court case, which began in the 1980s against Vakıflar Genel Müdürlüğü, the synagogue was registered as ‘Ashkenazy Synagogue’.

Tofre Begadim Ashkenazi Synagogue is restored in 1985, is still being used as the administrative building of the Ashkenazi community. The beautiful door, reaching from Felek Street by three steps, symbolizing three angels, is the entrance to the synagogue. The rectangular plan synagogue has three inside stories.

Jewish history in Istanbul seems limited….the synagogues were important for us to see and the guide made them as interesting as possible.

The big tip is to try and go completely private. Many of the large tour companies offer private tour and they are going to charge a significant amount of money for the tour guide. However, many locations offer self-guided tours and therefore you have the ability to supply your own tour guide. Easily Book your guided private Ephesus tours, to see all the treasures of Ephesus Turkey. It's often said that Turkey has more ancient cities and classical ruins than does Greece. Well, it's true, and the Aegean coast holds a great number of sites, including Ephesus, the grandest and best-preserved of them all.
