The vestiges to the east of the Odeum belong to the building called the Varius Baths. The excavation of all the parts of the baths except the cold room has been done, however no restoration has yet been undertaken.

The existence of a mosaic paved sports area in the front indicates that in later periods the Varius Baths were used as a Gymnasium. The Baths were set on the same level as the Basilica situated in front of the Odeum. As the land was hilly on this side, the rocks were cut to a depth of 6-7 metres and constituted the wall on one side of the building.

This culture valued cleanliness and sanitation and it was interesting to hear how the Roman baths worked.

Romans valued personal hygiene and used these baths on a regular basis. Medieval Europe festered in it`s own filth while the Turks adopted this technology.

The building is not in a great shape and you need a bit of knowledge about Roman bath houses to make it out what are you seeing. It had a hypocaust (to heat the water), hot room, cold room and a plunge pool and some public areas. Romans also used these bath houses not only to bathe but to socialize.

These baths also need a bit of imagination to go with them. There was a hot room, a relaxation room and a cold room.

The big tip is to try and go completely private. Many of the large tour companies offer private tour and they are going to charge a significant amount of money for the tour guide. However, many locations offer self-guided tours and therefore you have the ability to supply your own tour guide. Easily Book your guided private Ephesus tours, to see all the treasures of Ephesus Turkey. It's often said that Turkey has more ancient cities and classical ruins than does Greece. Well, it's true, and the Aegean coast holds a great number of sites, including Ephesus, the grandest and best-preserved of them all.
