The Turkish region of Cappadocia, a region of exceptional natural wonders, in particular characterized by fairy chimneys and a unique historical and cultural heritage, boasts one of the most dramatic sights in the world.
Visiting Cappadocia is such a change from visiting many other busy bustling sights all over Turkey. It is a great pleasure to wander in the vast open space filled with captivating natural attractions which have seen human history dated back in the Bronze Age.
While in Goreme Open Air Museum , the conical formations resulting from the volcanic eruptions that took place millions of years ago, just follow the path up to the top of one of the ridges where a spectacular view of the fairy chimneys awaits you. The natural cone formations contain caves and labyrinths. As early as the third century, those chimneys became a hiding place for early Christians who fled persecution from the Romans, and then later from raiding Muslims. In modern tourism, many caves have been turned into cave houses for tourist stays and the lunar-like setting of Goreme Valley has become popular for hot-air ballooning.
Many say the extremely unique landscape of Cappadocia resembles some scene in a Star Wars movie and yet you may be surprised to discover that no major commercial movies have been filmed there. It would be a perfect setting for movies such as Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter series.

Free! And great activity to do with young kids. Perfect lighter day activity to combine with Castle. Just take public transit from Goreme and then walk down the valley.
It is like a whole different planet. All the old chapels and churches, the caves, storage, narrow tunnels, frescos (I forget what you call the sigh like things). Well worth the visit. Take your time and enjoy – a lot of walking, very hilly. Not a place you can rush.
Walked from Uchisar to Gerome. Somehow lost the sign for the valley. Locals were friendly but of not much help for directions due to language barrier. Even got invited inside for tea… Anyway, a bit lost found a track heading to the valley through the old village.
My wife and I went there to take amazing pictures just before sunset (get there at least 2 hours ahead, not to miss anything, as there are mountains everywhere and the sun goes down earlier). The views are amazing.
This is all a bit overdone. Unless you know your history, and especially your Christian history this does not make a lot of sense.
We had to queue in the sun ( no shade) so be prepared.
We went at sunset and it is so very beautiful. We Just went for short walk as I have problem with ankle but stilll very special as beautiful formations and colours every where
Me and my wife decided on September that we should go somewhere different. Turkey seems to be a nice place as it is where the east meet the west. We decided to book the tour as there is lots of good review on them.
I was told by a few of my coworkers that I should check out an underground city in Cappadocia, so this is where my family and I decided to go. It was a huge disappointment. The drive from Goreme was boring (nothing to see along the way), and the wait in line was long.
Ihlara Valley is an awesome sight to behold as the top down view is simply amazing and it got better as you descend into the valley, using the flights of steps. Going down was fast but the reverse is a little tiring.
Really wonderful place where you can have a look at well preserved Monastries with Frescos.
Photographs are not allowed inside but can be taken outside.Souvenir shop is costier than the rest of the city. But having Photographs in Royal Costumes is 10TL each photo and a must in that tour giving you a chance to become Sultan (King ) or Sultana…
