The Turkish region of Cappadocia, a region of exceptional natural wonders, in particular characterized by fairy chimneys and a unique historical and cultural heritage, boasts one of the most dramatic sights in the world.
Visiting Cappadocia is such a change from visiting many other busy bustling sights all over Turkey. It is a great pleasure to wander in the vast open space filled with captivating natural attractions which have seen human history dated back in the Bronze Age.
While in Goreme Open Air Museum , the conical formations resulting from the volcanic eruptions that took place millions of years ago, just follow the path up to the top of one of the ridges where a spectacular view of the fairy chimneys awaits you. The natural cone formations contain caves and labyrinths. As early as the third century, those chimneys became a hiding place for early Christians who fled persecution from the Romans, and then later from raiding Muslims. In modern tourism, many caves have been turned into cave houses for tourist stays and the lunar-like setting of Goreme Valley has become popular for hot-air ballooning.
Many say the extremely unique landscape of Cappadocia resembles some scene in a Star Wars movie and yet you may be surprised to discover that no major commercial movies have been filmed there. It would be a perfect setting for movies such as Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter series.

This is a beautiful place, but perhaps a little more expensive than it should be You also have to pay again for the main church within the site
Some of the areas were closed, but this may have been due to the snow
Deverent Valley is situated on the Northern slopes of Aktepe, 1km from Pasabag Valley and 5km from Avanos. The ruins at Devrent valley are spread over three valleys which also house several pointed fairy chimneys with large stems.
Experience the beauty of Cappadocia as it surrounds you while hiking Pigeon Valley. The weather was perfect (low 70's and sunny) for our hike, but we still needed lots of water, so make sure you're prepared.
Fun adventure full of interesting features that date back to the 10th century. Some of the hikes are a bit intense but most are generally friendly.
The highlight of our entire stay in Turkey!!!Truly magnificent and breathtakingly beautiful! This is a must do/see on everybody's itinerary in Turkey! Make the time!!
We visited the Goereme open air museum at a busy holiday time, but the sights inside of the structures were very much worth the wait.
With my wife we visited the Goreme Valley. It is wonderful to know the way of life of Christian communities in 200 B.C.
An unique place, but not to spend the whole day (about 2 hours is enough). The most amazing thing is the fact that churches were carved out in the soft rock (called "tufa") and were actually used. That is always full of groups and I recommend an early morming visit to avoid crowds. The Cathedral is really the most beautiful…
We saw it twice, once floating past at close proximity on a balloon flight with Kaya and the from the ground up. Stunning rocky outcrop type structure of huge proportions honeycombed with caves. We didn't go up since we had already done a few other caves that day and it was a 90 degree day.
Seeing this underground city is a unique and most interesting experience. It is a tough physical walk, especially if you are tall, but worth the effort. Some passageways are low and narrow, and often require bending. Use a guide to get the most out of it because there is so much history.
