The Turkish region of Cappadocia, a region of exceptional natural wonders, in particular characterized by fairy chimneys and a unique historical and cultural heritage, boasts one of the most dramatic sights in the world.
Visiting Cappadocia is such a change from visiting many other busy bustling sights all over Turkey. It is a great pleasure to wander in the vast open space filled with captivating natural attractions which have seen human history dated back in the Bronze Age.
While in Goreme Open Air Museum , the conical formations resulting from the volcanic eruptions that took place millions of years ago, just follow the path up to the top of one of the ridges where a spectacular view of the fairy chimneys awaits you. The natural cone formations contain caves and labyrinths. As early as the third century, those chimneys became a hiding place for early Christians who fled persecution from the Romans, and then later from raiding Muslims. In modern tourism, many caves have been turned into cave houses for tourist stays and the lunar-like setting of Goreme Valley has become popular for hot-air ballooning.
Many say the extremely unique landscape of Cappadocia resembles some scene in a Star Wars movie and yet you may be surprised to discover that no major commercial movies have been filmed there. It would be a perfect setting for movies such as Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter series.

Undoubtedly, Cappadocia is an amazing area of the world. The old christian cave-churches, the incredible underground cities, the rock formations, the dawns and sunsets is simply unforgettable and a must go place. My wife and I were extremely lucky as we stayed at an excellent hotel (Doors of Cappadocia.
Its a great old castle withe greatest view from top of it.
You can see Erciyes mountain from top of the castle.
Definitely must-see and visit place.
There was amazing historical site. The resident of ancient people digged cave and made amazing living site, school, church, kitchen, etc. This action was great work, I think. But there was too dangerous to climb, so I saw someone hurt. As attaction, I think there need safety facility.
Easily avoided; but for the wonderful view of the Uchisar castle and town. Also very close to the Onyx factory (or one of them, as I discovered many more as we drove around). We were en-route to other places today so it wasnt such a big deal.
Pigeon Valley is part of the Goreme area and there are pigeons – the main attraction includes a view accross a valley, a small tree covered with the evil eye amulets, a stall to buy them and across the road a delightful jewellery design shop, studio, with the best turquoise ranging from samll to large pieces.
Firstly this is an amazing walk very nice scenery not very strenuous and generally pretty spectacular. The thing is around January its also very quiet we did not see anyone on the valley its entire length and wild dogs were definitely there. We walked Pigeon Valley the day after we walked (most) of Zime valley which is 5.6KM long during…
We were aware that the Goereme outdoor museum is hopelessly overrun with people and tried to avoid this by going in after 3 pm but the tour groups really don't start filtering out until after 4pm. So the best thing to do is to go in early (8 am) or after 4 pm. Otherwise you will be battleling crouwds and…
This was worth the walk from Goreme and the snow made it even better
Why are the doorways small? Why are the ceilings so low? Why are the tunnels so narrow? Aside from the obvious and skimmed reading, I would probably know the answer to these questions and more if we had signed up with a tour guide, and we probably would have had a tour guide if we hadn't been assaulted with offers…
We really enjoyed this visit. It was worth it to pay the extra 8 Lira to see the dark church…amazing color on the frescoes.
