If the Bible record is correct, and I have no reason to doubt it, Abraham was born in this area before moving to Ur of the Chaldees. The guide pointed out a building and described it as "the house where Abraham and Sarah were married and lived for some years.
The sunrise from Mt Nemrut is the way to see the place. It was beautiful!
We are very glad we went to Mt Nemrut. The views were spectacular, the statues were remarkable and we got a couple of great photos. However, I felt like we would have savoured the experience more if we'd gone during another time of day. It was incredibly cold and very windy. We spent less time looking around and feeling amazed…
Harran area is famous for its differently shaped houses, vast plain lands, ancient ruins and more Arabic than Turkish culture. The remnants of the old Ulu Mosque are still very impressive. The houses create almost a medieval middle eastern atmosphere. There is a very touristic small courtyard surrounded by Harran type houses where you can dress yourself with Arabic clothes…
There is a legend about Balikli Gol Sanliurfa:
Legend has it that Abraham was born and raised here, and that he incurred the wrath of King Nimrod when he not only declared war on idolatry but also won the heart of the king’s daughter, Zeliha. Nimrod sentenced Abraham to death, and a huge pyre was built in the middle of the city. Miraculously, just as Abraham was tossed into the fire, the flames were transformed into water and the logs into fish.
Since then, the Pool of Abraham and the carp that live in it have been considered sacred; the Pool of Ayn?-Zeliha is said to have been formed by Zeliha’s tears and it is said that anyone who eats them will be struck blind.
This to me was quite a spiritual experience. The anticipation of something great revealing itself after a long and quite strenuous climb did not disappoint. Fortunately my friends and I were accompanied by a caring gentle guide who assisted one of my elderly friends to the top of Nemrut mountain.
This the place where all the story begin. To feel the mystic atmosphere and to see the sacred places has to be seen at least one time in life!
I went to the nemrut mountain with private tour from goreme and had the best experience. Once in a lifetime experience…adventurous, breathtaking, enlightening! SO worth the task involved in arriving for sunrise.
Mount Nemrut is well a visit of its own. With a fabulous setting, besides the sculptures, it offers spectacular views both at sunrise and sunset. If you’re anywhere within several hundred kilometers of the site, definetely spare a couple of days to visit it!
Cappadocia.. Mt. Nemrut to Urfa. All I remember was that the climate was so hot here. There were a lot of kids who would attempt to sell local products or beg. Harran is far — almost to the border of Syria. The beehive houses are interesting and well-preserved…
