Çanakkale is a town and seaport in Turkey, in Çanakkale Province, on the southern (Asian) coast of the Dardanelles (or Hellespont) at their narrowest point. The population of the town is 106,116. Çanakkale Province, like Istanbul Province, has territory in both Europe and Asia. Ferries cross here to the northern (European) side of the strait.
The city is the nearest major town to the site of ancient Troy. The “wooden horse” from the 2004 movie Troy is exhibited on the seafront. Çanakkale is the second city to be situated on two continents after Istanbul. However Çanakkale is closer to mid-division than Istanbul.
Most of the places in Çanakkale are in walking distance. There is a Tourist Information office several meters from ferryboat station (on the right if you are coming from the ferry). You can pick up a free tourist map of Çanakkale and the surrounding areas. They also have schedules of the minibuses to Troy and ferries to Bozcaada.
Must see places in Çanakkale
- Trojan Horse
- Archaeological Museum
- Korfmann Library
- Naval Museum
Çanakkale,
The Navy were holding a function on the premises, so the museum was closed for the day. The outdoor exhibits were very interesting so we wished we could have seen more.
The idea of visiting Troy, scene of the famous battle of Troy and the Trojian Horse is attractive. But of course this is a very old city and is no where near as well preserved as Ephesus or Pergamon. I would still recommend going, especially if, like us you're working your way down the west coast of Turkey seeing all…
We were very lucky to be offered a private tour by the commander, and found the displays very interesting, and learnt many things we didn't know about the naval battles that preceded the Gallipoli campaign. Check out the minelayer (ship) and the fortress if you can.
This military museum is free and is open every day. It contains a large collection of guns of small to impressive size, cannons and military artefacts salvaged over a long period. These are displayed with the walls of the 1452 fort as a backdrop.
The location on the waterfront overlooking the Canakkale Strait is very picturesque.
There is great deal…
Signage available to give an over view of the site at Troy, however it is more helpful to have a guide with you.
Took a quick excursion here from our short stay in port. Fantastic view of the Dardanelles, given you an appreciation of just what a choke point it is for shipping traffic, and why it had such strategic value. The museum has a fantastic collection of WW1 & WW2 era artillery pieces of all calibers including some I have not seen…
Our tour guide made this site a marvelous experience. The history here was very moving. Spend at least two hours to feel the experience..One has to climb into the horse and see the views!
The Turks have great museums and do waxworks particularly well with historical displays. This was a fine example.Particularly moving because of the Anzac tie.
The mine ship and the outdoor museum are great.
Special note has to be made of the 2 collided bullets in the museum. 130 million to one chance of it happening, tells you how many bullets were flying around!
Visited here in mid-december and found half of the building closed. Also, when went walking around the site kept being told not allowed here even though we just followed other people.
There is very little new here except for a piece about Gallipoli and the sea battle over the entrance to the Black Sea.
Only really visit if waiting for…
