Çanakkale is a town and seaport in Turkey, in Çanakkale Province, on the southern (Asian) coast of the Dardanelles (or Hellespont) at their narrowest point. The population of the town is 106,116. Çanakkale Province, like Istanbul Province, has territory in both Europe and Asia. Ferries cross here to the northern (European) side of the strait.
The city is the nearest major town to the site of ancient Troy. The “wooden horse” from the 2004 movie Troy is exhibited on the seafront. Çanakkale is the second city to be situated on two continents after Istanbul. However Çanakkale is closer to mid-division than Istanbul.
Most of the places in Çanakkale are in walking distance. There is a Tourist Information office several meters from ferryboat station (on the right if you are coming from the ferry). You can pick up a free tourist map of Çanakkale and the surrounding areas. They also have schedules of the minibuses to Troy and ferries to Bozcaada.
Must see places in Çanakkale

Çanakkale,
If you compare it with other ruins nearby, this has really nothing to show. Therefore, unless you must pass near this site, just don't choose to go there, it's not worth it! The ticket entrance is expensive, the site is small and the information on how the buildings and the walls were don't help you to imagine how beautiful the…
Troy is a multi layered site which makes it a little difficult to visualise what it looked like 4000 years ago. It is so old though, that it has to be on the must do list!
We went there by local minibus and spent a bit of time. The ruins are fairly rubbly but atmospheric none the less. Don't bother with the wooden horse though.
We 've visited the area with Selcuk Senkan . His English is perfect and he knows all about the place, even the hidden corners! We recommend you to find him, if he has any time!
We visited Troy ourselves without a guide, and I think learnt about it all. It was a hot day so sitting on the benches put under trees while walking the site helped alot. Great historical site to visit.
I found Troy to be overrated. It's a drive to get too, expensive to get into and when your there you need one hell of an imagination. Mainly ruins which really not that well preserved.
If brad Pitt was there….. May have felt differently. Head to Ephesus instead!
Well it’s a choice to spend on an experience or for a material item. often than not I spend on an experience. Therefore when I had a chance to visit this mythological city on which the EPIC tale of Troy was written by Homer, I couldn’t resist.
Having read Iliad and watched the movie, I knew a bit of…
It's a long and hot walk from downtown. However, I loved the place. It's definitely worth a visit.
It is recommended to make an overnight stay instead of a day trip out of Istanbul because of the long journey.
Heinrich Schliemann came in 1868 and started digging straight into the bowel of Troy in search of Trojan treasures, and took credit for discovering Troy. The Schliemann Trench is appropriately named and it showed his intent for wealth with…
Great to see if you are in the area but I would not travel especially to see it.
Good walk-way around the site and good explanations available.
However, it seems like more excavation is needed to expose the sight properly.
